The ride

This Sunday November 5th Bent Kranks will be riding the Lilydale-Warburton Rail Trail. Generally considered one of Victoria's best Rail Trails, the route begins in Lilydale and travels through a bushy corridor and into an open rural landscape with picturesque views of the Yarra Ranges in the distance.

The Lilydale-Warburton trail surface is packed gravel, and is suitable for Mountain or Hybrid Bikes only (sorry no road bikes). It is an endurance ride, therefore you need to be reasonably fit and make sure that your bike is in good working order, to complete the return distance. It is anticipated to be a full day out, with no shorter 'opt out' distance, unless you make your own arrangements. Estimated return time of 4:30-5pm.

For more information and a map of the trail, visit http://www.railtrails.org.au/states/trails.php3?action=trail&trail=6

Bent Kranks is encouraging train travel to Lilydale, where one can take advantage of the 'Sunday Saver' ticket. These tickets are available at major stations and outlets (not from ticket machines). For $2.50, you and your bike can travel all day in all zones: 1, 2 and 3. Cheaper than petrol! If you choose to drive, there is free all day parking at Lilydale station, which is the start and finish point.

Lunch

We will stop for a good while - approx 1 hour - in Warburton to rest, refuel, revive and recuperate, before the return journey to Lilydale.

What to bring

Check the weather forecast and dress comfortably. Bring waterproof jacket, plenty of drinks/water, snacks, sunscreen. Bring $2.50 train fare, money to purchase lunch, or bring your own if you prefer. Bring a spare inner tube (or 2!), pump and puncture kit.

Helmets must be worn on all rides.

How to get there - by train:

Meet at Flinders Street station, platform 3 by 8:50am (Lilydale line train departs at 9:06am). The train is scheduled to arrive at Lilydale station at 10:11am. Alternatively, you can board the same train further up the line.

How to get there - by road:

Head east along the Maroondah Highway until you reach Lilydale township. Just before the level crossing, turn left into Lilydale Railway Station car park on the northern side of the line. There is ample free parking space. Arrive in time and be ready to ride when the 10:11 train arrives at the station. Melway 38 D4.
